Frequently Asked Questions About Backlighting Stone
Will I See Hot Spots Through the Stone?
When a backlighting system is designed correctly, the answer is generally no.
Several factors determine how evenly a slab illuminates, including:
- The translucency of the stone
- The distance between the LEDs and the back of the stone
- The type of lighting system used

Some highly translucent materials such as Cristallo Quartzite may benefit from the addition of a thin translucent diffuser film between the LED panel and the acrylic. This helps soften the light even further and creates an exceptionally uniform finished appearance.
How Long Do LED Light Panels Last?
Modern high-quality LEDs typically have an expected lifespan of approximately 30,000 hours in a sandwiched Zero air gap instsallation, claims of 50000 to 100000 hours are not realistic in this application.
For most residential applications, this equates to many years of normal daily use.
Actual lifespan depends on several factors including operating temperature, driver quality and overall system design.

What Colour Temperature Should I Choose?

Although every project is different, most residential clients ultimately choose a colour temperature somewhere between 4000K and 5000K.
This provides a clean white appearance while preserving the natural colour of the stone.
Warmer colour temperatures such as 3000K or 3500K can slightly warm the appearance of highly translucent materials.
Can Every Stone Be Backlit?
No.
The stone must allow light to pass through it.
Some of the most popular backlit materials include:

The level of translucency varies from slab to slab, which is why we always recommend viewing the actual slab under light before fabrication whenever possible.
