The Dowdie Residence in Braselton, Georgia features two illuminated Cristallo Quartzite kitchen islands, each requiring a custom LED panel layout to accommodate the unique countertop geometry.

This project demonstrates how a professionally designed LED backlighting system can reveal the natural crystalline structure, depth, movement, and veining within translucent quartzite while maintaining the strength and functionality of a conventional stone countertop.

Rather than adapting standard-size lighting products to the finished countertops, each frameless LED light panel was custom manufactured to suit the final illuminated areas. This allowed the lighting system to follow the island shapes closely and provide smooth, consistent illumination beneath the stone.

Project Overview

The kitchen includes two separate illuminated islands, each presenting a different backlighting challenge.

The primary island features a U-shaped countertop surrounding an integrated sink. Custom-shaped LED panels were used around the sink area to maximize illuminated coverage and maintain consistent light distribution throughout the countertop.

The secondary island consists primarily of a rectangular countertop layout with a custom angled corner. The angled section improves the clearance and walking space between the island and the main kitchen countertops while adding another custom element to the lighting design.

The completed installation uses nine custom frameless edge-lit LED light panels across approximately 63.31 square feet of illuminated Cristallo Quartzite.

Custom LED Panel Layout

Area One – U-Shaped Island

The first island required three custom LED panels to accommodate the U-shaped layout and integrated sink area.

  • Panel 1: Custom-shaped LED panel
  • Panel 2: Rectangular LED panel
  • Panel 3: Custom-shaped LED panel

Area Two – Secondary Island

The second island required six LED panels, including a custom triangular corner panel designed to follow the angled countertop section.

  • Panels 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9: Rectangular LED panels

Why Cristallo Quartzite Is Ideal for Backlighting

Cristallo Quartzite is one of the most popular natural stones for illuminated countertops and kitchen islands because of its exceptional translucency and crystalline internal structure.

When the stone is not illuminated, it retains the appearance of a premium natural quartzite countertop. Once the LED backlighting is switched on, light travels through the translucent areas and reveals depth, movement, crystal formations, mineral patterns, and veining that may not be visible under conventional room lighting.

Every Cristallo Quartzite slab is different. The translucency, colouring, mineral density, and light transmission can vary significantly from one slab to another. For this reason, testing the actual slab before fabrication is strongly recommended whenever possible.

Why Custom Frameless LED Panels Were Used

Nu World supplies both custom frameless LED light panels and flexible LED light sheets. Both systems have appropriate applications, but custom frameless panels are often preferred for residential countertops and kitchen islands because they simplify installation and reduce the number of electrical connections.

For the Dowdie Residence, the custom panel approach allowed the lighting system to accommodate the U-shaped sink area, angled corner, cabinet layout, panel seams, and required wire exits.

Using fewer custom-sized panels generally means fewer wire exits, fewer electrical connections, less installation labour, and a cleaner finished lighting system beneath the stone.

Backlit Countertop Layering Method

The horizontal backlighting assembly specified for this project consisted of the following layers:

  1. Kitchen cabinetry and structural support
  2. Plywood or MDF subtop
  3. Nu World custom frameless LED light panels
  4. ½-inch clear acrylic spacer and support layer
  5. Cristallo Quartzite countertop

The clear acrylic spacer creates separation between the LED panels and the underside of the stone. This additional distance allows the light to blend before it reaches the quartzite, helping reduce visible brightness variations and supporting more consistent illumination across the finished countertop.

The acrylic also provides a continuous support surface above the LED panels so the stone does not rest directly on the lighting components.

Mitred Edges for Better Light Transfer

The stone fabricator used 45-degree mitred edges rather than simply laminating or doubling the stone at the perimeter.

A properly fabricated mitred edge is generally the preferred approach for backlit countertops because it allows light to transfer more effectively into the edge detail. Laminated edges can create additional material thickness and bonding lines that restrict light transmission around the corner.

Our 6 mm LED panels can be positioned tightly against the inside of the stone mitre. Where required, the edge banding can be removed from the corresponding LED panel edge, exposing the bright acrylic panel edge and directing more light into the inside corner of the mitre.

This method can often illuminate a mitred drop of up to approximately three inches without requiring a separate vertical LED panel. Deeper waterfall faces or vertical drops may require additional lighting behind the vertical stone surface.

4000K Neutral White LED Backlighting

This project uses 4000K neutral white LEDs. Neutral white is a popular colour temperature for Cristallo Quartzite because it provides a clean, balanced appearance without making the stone look excessively warm or cool.

The ideal colour temperature ultimately depends on the individual slab, surrounding cabinetry, flooring, wall finishes, and the overall interior design. Testing the stone over several colour temperatures before ordering the final lighting system is recommended whenever practical.
