Three Featured Backlighting Projects: Onyx, Cristallo Quartzite & Translucent Marble

Translucent natural stone can look completely different once it is illuminated from behind. Veining becomes more pronounced, internal crystalline structure becomes visible, and a surface that already looks impressive in natural light can become the central architectural feature of a room.

In this project roundup, we are taking a closer look at three recent Nu World backlighting projects using three very different natural stones: Onyx, Cristallo Quartzite and rare translucent white marble.

Each project required a different panel layout and lighting approach, but all three were designed around the same principle: use custom LED backlighting to reveal the natural characteristics of the material rather than overpower them.

Nu World Custom Lighting and Design has specialized in custom LED backlighting for more than 17 years, supplying lighting systems for residential and commercial projects throughout the United States, Canada and internationally.

1. Johnson Residence – Backlit Onyx Kitchen Island

Location: West Palm Beach, Florida
Material: Onyx
Application: Large kitchen island
Lighting: 4100K neutral white
System: Custom Nu World frameless LED light panels

The Johnson Residence in West Palm Beach features a large luxury Onyx kitchen island designed to act as one of the primary focal points of the interior.

Onyx is particularly well suited to backlighting because of its natural translucency. Once illuminated, the light travels through the stone and reveals layers, color variation, veining and internal movement that are far less visible when the material is viewed under normal room lighting.

For this project, Nu World supplied eight custom frameless LED light panels using 4100K neutral-white illumination. The lighting system was designed to provide smooth illumination across the large island while maintaining the natural color and character of the Onyx.

The system is also dimmable, allowing the island to move from a relatively subtle architectural glow to a much more dramatic illuminated feature depending on the desired atmosphere.

2. Manville Residence – Backlit Cristallo Quartzite Kitchen Niche

Location: Milton, Georgia
Material: Cristallo Quartzite
Application: Kitchen backsplash niche
Illuminated Area: 103.5″ × 72″
LED Panels: 12 custom frameless panels
Color Temperature: 3500K
Control: Fully dimmable

The Manville Residence demonstrates a very different use of architectural backlighting. Instead of illuminating a horizontal countertop or island, the project uses Cristallo Quartzite to create a glowing vertical kitchen niche behind the cooking area.

The complete illuminated area measures approximately 103.5″ × 72″ and uses 12 custom frameless LED light panels. Each panel was manufactured specifically for the project and configured at 3500K, creating a warmer illuminated appearance that complements the surrounding kitchen.

A ½” clear acrylic spacer was incorporated into the system to help blend the illumination across the highly crystalline material.

Cristallo Quartzite can be particularly striking when backlit because illumination exposes the crystalline structure and internal veining of the stone. In this installation, the niche changes from a decorative stone surface into an illuminated architectural feature while still remaining fully integrated into the kitchen design.

3. Mickelson Residence – Backlit White Marble Bathroom Vanity

Location: Dallas, Texas
Material: Rare translucent white marble
Application: Bathroom vanity
Lighting: 4100K neutral white
System: Multiple custom-shaped Nu World frameless LED light panels
Dimming: PWM-120 0–10V dimming

The Mickelson Residence in Dallas provided an opportunity to illuminate a material that is considerably less common in backlighting applications: translucent white marble.

Most white marble does not transmit enough light to produce this type of effect, making suitable slabs relatively uncommon. In this project, the characteristics of the selected stone made it possible to turn the bathroom vanity into a distinctive illuminated feature.

Because of the shape and configuration of the vanity, the lighting system could not simply use one standard rectangular panel. Nu World supplied multiple frameless LED light panels manufactured in different shapes and sizes to follow the geometry of the finished surface.

The panels use 4100K neutral-white illumination. This allows the lighting to reveal the natural translucency and internal detail of the marble without introducing an excessively warm or cool color cast.

The lighting is paired with PWM-120 power supplies and 0–10V dimming, giving the homeowner control over the final intensity of the illuminated vanity.

What These Three Backlighting Projects Have in Common

The Johnson, Manville and Mickelson residences use different materials, different applications and different lighting layouts, but they demonstrate several important characteristics of successful architectural backlighting.

The Lighting System Is Designed Around the Surface

Translucent stone does not behave like a conventional lighting fixture. Every slab has different levels of translucency, veining, density and internal structure. For that reason, the lighting system needs to be designed around the material and finished architectural dimensions rather than forcing the project to conform to standard-size lighting products.

Custom Panel Sizes Reduce Compromises

Nu World frameless LED light panels are manufactured specifically for each project. Panels can be produced in custom sizes and shapes, allowing the lighting layout to follow kitchen islands, vanities, niches, bars, walls and other architectural features.

Color Temperature Changes the Appearance of the Material

The color temperature selected for a project directly affects how the illuminated material appears. Neutral white lighting can preserve the natural coloration of many stones, while warmer lighting can intentionally introduce a softer appearance.

See the Frameless LED Light Panels Behind the Projects

The completed stone is what people see, but the lighting system underneath or behind the surface is what makes the illumination possible.

Nu World custom frameless LED light panels are ultra-thin edge-lit acrylic panels manufactured for the dimensions and lighting requirements of each project. The frameless construction allows the illuminated area to extend close to the perimeter without the bulky aluminum border found on conventional light boxes.

The panels can be manufactured for applications including:

  • Translucent stone countertops
  • Kitchen islands
  • Backsplashes and niches
  • Bathroom vanities
  • Feature walls
  • Bars and reception desks
  • Architectural resin
  • Glass
  • Displays and signage
  • Custom architectural features

Frequently Asked Questions About Backlit Stone Projects

What types of natural stone can be backlit?

Onyx is one of the most naturally translucent stones used for backlighting. Certain Quartzites, including Cristallo, can also transmit significant amounts of light. Some varieties of marble can be backlit as well, although sufficient translucency is much less common and should be evaluated on a slab-by-slab basis.

Can LED panels be manufactured for irregular shapes?

Yes. Nu World frameless LED light panels are custom manufactured and can be produced in many different shapes and sizes to accommodate architectural layouts, corners, curves, fixtures and other project-specific requirements.

Can backlit stone be dimmed?

Yes. Dimming can be incorporated into a backlighting system when specified. The appropriate dimming equipment depends on the LED system and the electrical requirements of the project.

What color temperature should be used behind translucent stone?

The correct color temperature depends on the material and the desired appearance. Neutral-white lighting is frequently used when the objective is to maintain the natural coloration of the stone, while warmer temperatures can intentionally create a warmer visual effect.

Do all translucent stones require the same lighting configuration?

No. Stone translucency, veining, thickness, panel layout and the desired illumination level can all affect the final system design. Highly crystalline materials may require additional spacing or diffusion to produce smooth illumination.
