Backlighting countertops, walls, and other surfaces can transform a space into something truly spectacular. Whether you’re a lighting designer or a homeowner looking to create a unique design feature, understanding the process and options is key to success. Here are the five most asked questions about backlighting surfaces using Nu World LED Light Panels:
1. What materials can be backlit with LED light panels?
While onyx is one of the most popular choices for backlit countertops, there are many other materials that can benefit from LED backlighting, including:
- Marble
- Architectural resins: 3Form, Lumicor
- Solid surfaces: Corian, Avonite, Staron
- Architectural glass: Joel Berman Glass, Glass2
- Translucent concrete: LUCCON
- Translucent wood: Luminoso
- Semi-precious stones: Caesarstone’s Concetto
Each of these materials has unique properties that interact beautifully with backlighting, making them perfect for countertops, walls, and decorative features.
2. Will there be shadows or dark lines where the panels meet?
When multiple LED panels are installed together, it’s possible to see a fine seam line or slight dark areas where the panels butt up against one another. To avoid these shadows, we recommend leaving a ½” to ¾” space between the surface material and the LED panels. This can be easily achieved by placing a layer of clear acrylic on top of the panels, ensuring smooth, even illumination across the surface.
3. How much space should I leave between the light panel and the surface for backlighting stone?
This depends on the material you’re working with, but for many types of stone (especially white onyx), we recommend leaving ½” to 1″ of space between the LED light panel and the surface. This ensures that light is distributed evenly, especially along the edges, and helps avoid any hot spots or bright edges. If you’re working with laminated onyx, a 1″ space is ideal to prevent uneven light distribution.
4. How bright are the LED light panels, and can I adjust the brightness?
The brightness of each LED light panel depends largely on the size and configuration. For example, a smaller panel with LEDs on two sides will be brighter than a larger panel with LEDs spaced the same way. While exact brightness levels are difficult to predict due to custom sizes and configurations, Nu World LED panels are fully dimmable, allowing you to adjust the light level to your desired ambiance. We also offer dimming power supplies that give you full control over the lighting.
5. What is the lifespan of the LED light panels?
Nu World LED Light Panels are designed to last between 50,000 and 60,000 hours. If used for an average of 12 hours per day, the panels should last over 11 years. This long lifespan ensures that your backlighting installation will remain effective and visually striking for years to come, with minimal maintenance.
