When done right, backlighting can transform translucent stone into a dramatic, glowing feature — but what most people don’t realize is that the layering system underneath the slab is just as important as the lighting itself.
Not all stones light up the same way. Some materials, like Onyx or Cristallo Quartzite, may reveal seam lines or hot spots if not layered correctly. Others may block too much light unless a proper diffusion system is used.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to layer your LED panel system for flawless results, and when you’ll want to consider adding a clear acrylic spacer or diffusion layer between the lighting and the slab.

Basic Layering Setup (No Diffuser Needed)
Many projects do not require any extra diffusion layers — especially if the stone has strong veining, natural patchiness, or moderate translucency. In these cases, the typical setup includes:
- Cabinet or framework base for support
- ¾” plywood or MDF substrate for a flat, stable surface
- LED light panel — usually 6mm or 8mm thick
- Stone slab placed directly on top
This clean setup is suitable for countertops, vertical panels, and bar faces — especially when you’re using a single LED panel with no seams.

When to Add a Clear Acrylic Spacer or Diffusion Layer
If your stone is very translucent, crystalline, or evenly colored (like white Onyx, Arctic Ice, or certain Quartzites), it may reveal seams, LED dots, or brightness inconsistencies. That’s where a layering spacer becomes critical.
In these cases, use the following configuration:
- Cabinet or framework
- ¾” plywood or MDF substrate
- LED light panel
- ½” to 1″ clear acrylic (Plexiglas) sheet
- Optional white diffusion layer (like 7328 acrylic or a Lee filter film)
- Stone slab placed on top
This additional spacing blends the light, eliminates hot spots, and ensures smooth, uniform illumination — especially when multiple LED panels are tiled together.
