The Johnson Residence in West Palm Beach, Florida features a spectacular backlit onyx kitchen island, transforming the natural stone into the centerpiece of this luxury residential kitchen.
Measuring approximately 10 feet long by 4 feet wide, the large-format onyx island was illuminated using eight custom Nu World frameless LED light panels. The panel layout was specifically designed to provide smooth, even illumination through the translucent onyx while minimizing the number of individual panels, wire exits and electrical connections required beneath the stone.
The finished result creates a rich, warm glow that brings out the natural movement, depth and variation within the onyx while maintaining the clean architectural appearance expected in a high-end residential installation.
Custom Frameless LED Panel Design & Dimming System
The Johnson Residence uses Nu World’s custom frameless edge-lit LED light panel system, manufactured specifically for architectural stone backlighting.
Each panel consists of precision-cut acrylic with high-output LEDs integrated into the edges. Rather than using a large number of smaller lighting modules beneath the stone, the approximately 10′ × 4′ island was divided into just eight custom LED panels, significantly reducing the number of wire exits and electrical connections required across the installation.
The panels were manufactured at 4100K, providing a clean, neutral white light source that allows the natural coloration of the onyx to create the finished illuminated appearance.
For complete brightness control, the installation uses four Mean Well PWM-120 dimmable power supplies, allowing the backlighting to be adjusted to suit the surrounding lighting conditions and desired atmosphere.
